2011 Mazda MAZDASPEED3

The 2011 Mazda MAZDASPEED3 is a single model in what is a wide Mazda 3 range. It’s the sports oriented child of a boyhood dream, designed to compete with the likes of the Golf GTi, Mini Cooper S and Camaro V6. It’s a difficult marketplace in which to work, but it’s also an exciting one.

The MAZDASPEED3 is a four-door sedan that just about fits into the sports compact segment. With the likes of Subaru, Ford and Mitsubishi all offering similar sized and specified cars, the action is hot around here. The Mazda holds its own though. It isn’t as in your face as an Evo, or as ugly as the new Impreza but neither is it as understated as the new Focus ST.

The body shape is aggressive, the stance assured. It’s all business, but still resembles the other Mazda 3’s in the line. It’s only the lowered suspension, side skirts and front grille that really differentiate the MAZDASPEED3 from the others. The larger alloy wheels escape notice as you smile at the car you’re about to drive.

Inside is a slimmed down interior. The materials are still of a high quality, but there are less of them. It isn’t as spartan as a Lotus or Ariel Atom, but you can see that weight was definitely a consideration.

The seats are half-bucket seats that do a good job of supporting you as you drive. Cornering is fun as the lumbar and kidney supports hold you in place as g-forces try to turn you sideways. The wheel and controls are right where they need to be. The dashboard is clear and unambiguous, with the clocks being right in view. You’re going to need to keep an eye on that speedometer if you’re driving around the city!

Under the hood is a 2.3 liter turbocharged engine producing 263 bhp. All that power goes to the front wheels making for an exciting drive. Fortunately, traction control and a limited-slip differential help with the inevitable torque-steer.

The six speed manual gearbox works well with that diff to control all the power on the road. The suspension is firm without being bone-shaking. Cornering is handled confidently with very little body roll. It seems to strike the perfect balance between sports car, and runabout.

2011 Mazda MAZDASPEED3 is a solid contender in the niche it inhabits. Spend longer than five minutes driving it and your decision between buying it, or a new Golf GTi just became a little bit harder. While the Golf is undisputed king of the market, the young pretender from Mazda is snapping at its heels.

For a base price of $24,995, you get a lot of car for the money. It’s only a grand cheaper than the GTi. Of the two, we would be hard pressed to make a decision. On one hand you have the iconic VW, king of the hill, but ageing, and ever so popular. On the other, the 2011 Mazda MAZDASPEED3, in cool blue, is the more attractive car. It offers a great drive and is a little more exclusive when on the road.
